Psychedelic visuals for a psychedelic jazz ensemble
Founded by Bostonian expat in Denmark, Brandon Armstrong,
The Monk Batucada Quarteto was brought to life in
the sound studios at Jyderup Højskole. Mixing psychedelic jazz with electronic
and samba vibes, MBQ toured the venues and cafés of Copenhagen in 2016–2017.
With an everchanging ensemble of guests and members, the sound of
MBQ was unpredictable at every show.
As their resident VJ, I had to be able to improvise along with the band.
The visuals were rendered in realtime, using the amazing
3D Mandelbulb Ray Tracer
by Tom Beddard, in combination with VDMX. Through some fiddling in Quartz Composer,
I was able to explore a colorful, morphing fractal landscape live as the
band played.
Being able to react to the mood and impulse of the performers in realtime
proved to be far more fun than relying on pre-rendered video.
You can listen to Monk Batucade Quarteto on Spotify or SoundCloud and follow them on Facebook.
